Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Wednesday that the anti-Islamic and anti-Muslim rhetoric used by US President-elect Donald Trump during his election campaign was for political gain and that all politicians do such things.
Speaking at a meeting of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in İstanbul, Erdoğan called on European leaders to accept Trump’s victory in the US election as he is the president elected by the people.
Erdoğan further said that some European leaders had come to him and said, “Trump is anti-Muslim.” However, Erdoğan described Trump’s anti-Islamic rhetoric as a political tool and further said that all politicians, including him, use such tools for political gain.
“They [European leaders] come to us, and say Trump speaks against Muslims and Islam. We are used to such things in politics. We say it today and get it fixed tomorrow. We shouldn’t be deceived by this game.”
